I have a feeling Anthropology is going to become my new favorite class.

I got mine just the other day! Mine isn’t for a class, so I’m so jealous that you’re able to take a physical anthro class! It’s increasingly aggravating how cultural our anthro department is. But I love it anyway. And I’m so excited to colorrr.

I was so excited to get this for my physical anthro class a few years ago. I STILL look at it for my anthro stuff now. Just shows more people should take anthro, it is totes awesome.

Yes!! I love that book.

I bought a copy of this at the  bookfest last week. :D I was going to give it to the daughter of a family friend for her birthday but being the big child that I am, I decided I liked it too much to part with it.

I’m intrigued. Should I be or is this want kids do for fun?

In 1961, Leonid Rogozov, 27, was the only surgeon in the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. During the expedition, he felt severe pain in the stomach and had a high fever. Rogozov examined himself and discovered that his appendix was inflamed and could burst at any time. With a local anesthesia, he operated himself to remove the appendix. An engineer and a meteorologist assisted surgery.

I know you’re tired of these videos, but this is legit.

The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb.

It’s this kind of stuff that makes me love BU and just people overall :)

Things like this make me want to be a physician

Here’s my talk at TEDx Mid-Atlantic a few weeks ago.

Well for the 5% of my Constant Readers who HAVEN’T seen this and then frantically messaged me with a variation of “OMG, Jay Parkinson talked about your blog!” — here’s the video. The whole presentation is quite interesting, and downright sobering/important if you’re in healthcare — but if you are my mom and just want to jump to The Part Where Dr. Cranquis is Mentioned, see 12:20 and 14:40.

But let me reply to Jay’s reassurances that “Cranquis doesn’t need to be afraid of the law.” My reason for maintaining this secret identity is not because of a fear of The Law: I agree, I do not think I would be at risk of actually losing a lawsuit if some doofus decided to sue me for giving out more personalized and knowledgable advice than WebMD or Dr. Google. HOWEVER, what would be at risk would be MY JOB — for the very reasons outlined in Jay’s talk.

Medicine is an institution ruled by administrators and the old-guard doctors who dare not think outside the box. How do you imagine that the big-chief mucky-mucks who run my employing health-care organization would react, if the first time they heard of “Dr. Cranquis” was in connection with “…is actually a doctor who works for us, and is being sued because he told some doofus that their rash/lump in throat/waking nightmares/whatever was unlikely to need immediate medical attention, and the doofus has now found some lawyer who says otherwise…”? Bing-bang-boom, Cranquis is out of a job, and then who cares if a notable leader in the field of integrating the web and healthcare says that Dr. Cranquis’ blog is “one of the coolest things on the internet”?!? *pleased grin*

So, despite my own personal pride in running a blog that JAY PARKINSON RECOMMENDS TO STRANGERS (eek!), and his reassurances that “nobody has died from googling medical advice on the internet” — I’m gonna keep on clutching my identity with both hands.

That being said… I might let you peek behind the curtain just a little bit… in 4 days… stay tuned. ;)

A thought-provoking post from a rather new blog, written by two med students. Too bad it’s not a Tumblr blog, or I’d be following it already. Enjoy

I guess I shouldn’t have ignored tip #4 from that article, eh? Oh well, I made it anyways.

(Parts of their website are still having technical difficulties, so I hope the link works…)
